In the time of Ironclads, there was one with a peculiar flag and an equally peculiar crew.
No one remembers the ship’s original name, but it came to be known as ‘Ol Iron-Sides because it was considered indestructible at the time.
The ship was armed, but, often enough, ran out of ammunition and was forced to sit in place and wait for backup while the enemy exhausted its weapons supply.
While the crew was waiting out an assault or simply had leisure time, they would tell stories to pass the time, taking minutes to come up with flimsy tales of two objects pitted against each other, weeks to come up with short works, or only an instant to recall a dream.
This is where the story transitions from legend to myth.
One day, a crew member turned on his fellow shipmates and set off a barrel of black powder in the ship’s hull. The turncoat managed his escape, but the rest of the crew perished. Then, something out of children’s fairy tales is said to have happened. The armor plating that was stripped off from the ship blew into the wind, turning to paper and carrying the stories the crew developed. And, as if only to further drive the point home, the flag changed, adding a scroll-like shape at its center welcoming the beloved former captain back to his old ironclad.
